In the late 1980s Audi, eager to promote the performance characteristics of Quattro all-wheel drive system, entered a car loosely based on the Audi 90 in the 1989 IMSA season. The car sported a custom, tube-frame chassis and a 5-cylinder, 20-valve engine displacing a modest sounding 2.2 liters. In reality nothing about the car was modest. Audi engineers bolted up a huge turbo charger which drove power to an insane 720 hp. The car had massively wide tires at all four wheels and the huge exhaust pipe jutted out from what would have been the passenger door on the production car. In the IMSA series it ran rings around the two-wheel drive competition.
